Michelin Star for the Restaurant Syttende at the Steigenberger Alsik Hotel & Spa

Syttende, the top-class restaurant at the Steigenberger Alsik Hotel & Spa in Sønderborg, Denmark, has been awarded a Michelin Star. This is the first time that such an accolade has been accorded to a restaurant in South Jutland. The Syttende Restaurant is located on the 17th floor and offers sensational views of the Alssund Strait, which links the Als Fjord with the Outer Flensburg Firth.

“I am very proud and grateful,” stated Jesper Koch, Executive Chef at the Syttende. “This is a great recognition of everything we have achieved at the Syttende. We were ambitious from the very outset and never made any compromises in terms of the dishes and experience we are serving up. This Michelin Star is a reward for all our hard work, but our aspirations remain. The next objective is to secure a second Michelin Star.”

Jesper Koch is able to look back on an impressive career which has taken in high-end restaurants as well as several popular TV shows. He now has the right to call himself a Michelin chef and hopes that the beautiful region of South Jutland, which lies near the German border, will attract greater attention.

The Steigenberger Alsik Hotel & Spa was opened two years ago. It boasts 190 rooms, three restaurants, a health and beauty spa facility extending over an area of 4,500 m² and a meetings and conference area. The Bitten & Mads Clausen's Foundation, one of the hotel’s investors, chose Jesper Koch to develop and manage its three restaurants.

“I am very thankful for the support I have received from BMC Fonden and its Chairman Peter Mads Clausen,” Jesper Koch continued. “They always believed that a world-class restaurant with a passion for local produce could be created in Sønderborg. I hope that this Michelin Star will help raise awareness of our wonderful region, of its fabulous food culture, of its rich history and of its magnificent natural environment. Jesper also went on to praise the whole of the staff at the Syttende and his right hand man, Head Chef Peter Rødsgaard.  “I couldn’t have done it without them.”
